ActiveSand® for Fracturing

ActiveSand® is introduced to the well in a slurry, either as a coated solid or hydrocarbon dispersion, where it reacts with formation water at the point of fracture and rapidly releases hydrogen gas. It can be introduced in advance of the proppant load to extend fracturing or be mixed-in with the proppant load to aid in transport.
Significant heat and pressure are generated, along with sodium silicate (Na2Si2O5). Using 100,000 pounds of ActiveSand® (at 10,000 psi and 100oC) would generate 8,800 ft3 of additional fracture space. To augment a typical job, the application might employ anywhere from a few hundred thousand to several million pounds of ActiveSand®.
Studies indicate that ActiveSand® significantly reduces the multivalent cations found in flowback water. After introduction of ActiveSand®, all detectable multivalent cations (Ba, Ca, Fe, Sr, Mg, Mn) were almost completely removed. This reduction in multivalent cations can make water reuse and disposal easier and less costly for producers.
ActiveSand® is made from environmentally-benign materials and produces no harmful by-products. The reaction by-product, sodium silicate, has been used in water treatment systems as a corrosion inhibitor and for water softening applications for more than a hundred years. In many parts of the country, ActiveSand® may reduce environmental concerns about heavy metals or NORM in flowback water after frac completion.
